1. The ambitious scheme of giving cash subsidy on cooking gas directly to the consumers has become the world's largest direct benefit transfer, with 2.5 crore households getting about 550 crore rupees since November 15. Under the direct benefit transfer on LPG (DBTL), cash subsidy is paid to the consumers so that they can buy cooking gas at market price. The scheme was rolled out in 54 districts and will be extended all over the country from January 1, 2015.

2. Kolkata-based United Bank of India (UBI) launched three new ‘alternate delivery products’ that will provide more convenience to the customers. This puts the bank in the select group of banks offering the facility of online transactions (RuPay e-commerce), with RuPay debit cards. Another product ‘TD on Missed Call’ gives the ease of investment in pre-defined Fixed Deposit (Rs.10,000) by just giving a missed call on a particular number. The other facility launched includes the online PPF account maintenance.

3. Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is one of the 2014 top ten scientists chosen by the prestigious journal ‘Nature’. This is the first time in the recent past that the journal has chosen an Indian working in India. He is listed along with other people like Andrea Accomazzo, the Rosetta flight operations director, European Space Agency.

4. Veteran Actor Amitabh Bachchan was honoured with the second ‘Yash Chopra Memorial National Award’ in Mumbai. The award was given by Governor of Maharashtra Vidyasagar Rao at a programme organized by TSR Foundation headed by Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Dr. T. Subbarami Reddy.

5. The global Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) that lays down international rules for the 85 billion US dollars global arms trade came into effect. According to UN Chief Ban Ki-moon it is the first legally-binding multilateral agreement that prohibits States from exporting conventional weapons to countries when they know those weapons will be used for genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes.

6. Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched Mission Indradhanush to achieve full immunization coverage for all children by 2020. The Mission Indradhanush aims to cover all those children who are either unvaccinated or are partially vaccinated against seven vaccine preventable diseases including diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B.

7. Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan launched an SMS-based warning system on the occasion of Good Governance Day as part of Prime Minister's Digital India Programme which will provide alerts on cyclones, tsunami and other weather-related natural calamities. Information on warnings will be disseminated to officials involved in administration and general public.


8. Renowned Hindi poet and litterateur Nand Chaturvedi passed away. He was 91 years old. Chaturvedi was honoured several awards like Mira Award, KK Birla Foundation's Bihari award, the All India Radio Award etc.

9. After a gap of 20 odd years, the government is all set to bring one rupee currency back. According to the Finance Ministry the one rupee currency note which was last printed in November 1994, will be re-printed from Januray 1, 2015. The government had stopped the printing of one rupee note, two rupee note and five rupee note in November 1994, February 1995, and November 1995 respectively. The Finance Ministry has issued gazete notification about it.

10. India has been placed in the top bracket globally as one of the jurisdictions that strongly adhere to global standards on exchange of information pertaining to the areas of banking, insurance and securities. The Financial Stability Board (FSB) in its latest update on compliance has named these jurisdictions as demonstrating sufficiently strong adherence to international standards. Besides India, China, the US, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and Cayman Islands are included in the FSB list.
